Boxing heavyweight champion Tyson Fury is reportedly planning to acquire his local football club, Morecambe FC, alongside former Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The duo, who have been friends for years, discussed the potential purchase during a recent meeting in Poland, where they filmed a World Cup advertisement.
Netflix Documentary Ambitions
According to sources, Fury and Ibrahimovic are keen on buying the National League North side and producing a Netflix documentary titled Rise of Morecambe, mirroring the success of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's Welcome to Wrexham. The Wrexham project, which documented the club's rise from non-league to near-Championship playoffs, has inspired the pair to attempt a similar story with the Shrimps.
An insider revealed: "They were in Warsaw filming an advert for the World Cup. Tyson was talking to him about buying his local home town club Morecambe FC. They want to buy the club and make a Netflix documentary called Rise of Morecambe together. Just like Ryan Reynolds did with Wrexham."
Club's Struggles and Fury's Local Ties
Morecambe narrowly avoided extinction last year when the Panjab Warriors consortium rescued the club. However, a poor season saw them relegated from the National League, following their drop from League Two the previous year. Fury, who lives in Morecambe and has his main gym located at the club's stadium, is deeply connected to the community. Netflix previously documented his personal life in At Home With The Furys.
Ibrahimovic, who retired in 2023 after a legendary career with clubs like Ajax, Juventus, Barcelona, and Manchester United, has maintained a close friendship with Fury. The source added: "Tyson and Zlatan have been great friends for years. Zlatan used to go to the gym with Tyson when he played for United."
Future Plans
Fury is set to face Anthony Joshua later this year in a blockbuster heavyweight clash, also to be screened on Netflix. The documentary project would further expand his media presence, while Ibrahimovic's global appeal could attract significant attention to the lower-league club.
