Manchester United have been handed the green light to sign Lucas Bergvall, a 20-year-old midfielder who is reportedly eager to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer. The Swedish international, who previously underwent trials at United in 2020 and 2022, could finally make the move to Old Trafford as a potential replacement for Casemiro.
Bergvall's Breakthrough at Tottenham
Bergvall emerged as a breakthrough talent during his debut season with Tottenham, winning the supporters' player of the year award. He became a regular under manager Ange Postecoglou and played a key role in the club's run to Europa League glory, although injury ruled him out of the final against United.
However, his progress stalled last season amid managerial upheaval at Spurs. Bergvall managed only 11 league starts as he slipped down the pecking order. Reports now suggest he is considering his future, with Tottenham pursuing Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Interest from Other Clubs
BBC Sport has reported that Bergvall's representatives have engaged in discussions with Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, and Chelsea. This opens the door for United to reignite their interest in a player they have tracked since his teenage years.
United's initial attempts to sign Bergvall were thwarted by Brexit rules, which barred clubs from signing under-18 players from abroad. He had a trial at United in 2020 and returned in 2022, but changes in the recruitment department meant a deal was not completed. He subsequently joined Swedish club Djurgarden, where his performances attracted Tottenham.
Comparisons to Frenkie de Jong
Bergvall has drawn comparisons to Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong, a long-term United target. Djurgarden sports coordinator Peter Kisfaludy told football.london in 2024: "His best position is as a number eight. He's a box-to-box player, running into the box and he's really good at playing the ball between the lines. He's a little copy of Frenkie de Jong. He's really fast with the ball, really good with the ball and a fantastic dribbler."
United's Midfield Overhaul
United are actively seeking central midfielders following Casemiro's departure this summer. The club has already secured a deal for Atalanta's Ederson and has been linked with various other targets. Bergvall's availability offers a chance to rectify previous errors and bring in a young, talented midfielder who could develop into a key player.
Bergvall will be keen to secure regular playing time after a stop-start campaign at Spurs. While breaking into United's midfield would be challenging, the move could end a transfer saga that began six years ago.
