Award-Winning Cocktail Bar Mother Mercy Opens New Durham Venue
Mother Mercy Opens New Cocktail Bar in Durham City Centre

Mother Mercy, the award-winning cocktail bar, has opened a new venue in Durham city centre, bringing its acclaimed drinks and stylish design to the heart of the ancient city. The bar, which originally launched in Newcastle in 2019, now occupies a prime spot on Silver Street near Framwellgate Bridge, just a short walk from Durham Cathedral.

A Homecoming for Co-Owner Neil Donachie

For co-owner Neil Donachie, the expansion marks a personal milestone. “Opening in Durham feels incredibly special because it's where I grew up and somewhere I've always hoped to bring Mother Mercy,” he said. The bar had been searching for the right location for some time, and the Silver Street building immediately appealed due to its character and personality.

Design and Original Features

The refurbishment uncovered original tiles and features that had been hidden for years, which the team preserved to respect the building’s history. Working with Newcastle-based designer AND+ Studios, the interior captures the Mother Mercy vibe while feeling unique to Durham. The result is a bright, breezy space with a striking red front that stands out on the street.

Award-Winning Reputation

Mother Mercy has been twice listed among the Top 50 Cocktail Bars in the UK and earned a further 'top 18' ranking. Bar manager James Brown was recently named one of the 'World Class' Top 100 Bartenders and shortlisted for the Top 50 Cocktail Bars' rising star award. The new venue is the fifth for the independent brand, which also operates in Newcastle’s Cloth Market, Grey Street, Fenwick, and Heaton.

Menu and Service

The cocktail menu includes favourites like East 8 Hold Up, Mirrorball Spritz, and Hot Honey Margarita, along with classic cocktails and new seasonal specials. The bar also offers Guinness and lager on tap. Table service allows guests to order without leaving their seats. Neil Donachie noted: “What I love most is that it already feels like it belongs here. It's intimate without feeling exclusive; relaxed without losing a sense of occasion, and somewhere you can settle in for the evening rather than rush through a drink.”

Future Plans

Mother Mercy plans to launch cocktail masterclasses, giving customers a chance to learn about the craft. The bar is already settling into Durham, with a vibrant exterior and inviting interior designed to make the most of summer weather.
