Devonshire Homes Enters Administration After 34 Years

Devonshire Homes, a Tiverton-based housebuilder with over 34 years of history, has entered administration. Joint administrators Sarah Collins and Jonathan Marston of Alvarez & Marsal Europe LLP were appointed on June 18, 2026, according to a notice on the company's website.

Background and Operations

Originally founded as Langworthy Construction, the company rebranded to Devonshire Homes and operated across Devon, Cornwall, and Somerset. The business employed around 77 staff and generated turnover of £52 million in the year to September 2024, according to its latest accounts. During the same period, it recorded a pre-tax loss of £137,024, a reversal from the profit reported the previous year.

The company's live sites included in the administration are The Grange in Bideford and St Michael’s Reach in Penzance. The administrators stated that the administration relates solely to Devonshire Homes Limited, and queries regarding other Devonshire Homes branded developments should be directed to the relevant companies.

Financial Difficulties

The builder attributed its difficulties primarily to a partially completed timber-frame project that cost significantly more to complete than expected, as reported by Property Week. This resulted in a forecast loss of £1.28 million. The company noted that the development fell "outside of its core strategy of building single family new build homes using its standard housetypes."

Legacy and Impact

Since 2008, Devonshire Homes has delivered more than 2,000 homes across the South West. The company built traditional countryside homes with thatched roofs, contemporary apartments, and new houses, and redeveloped Grade II listed buildings. The administration marks the end of an era for the award-winning housebuilder, which had been in business since 1992.
