A family-run furniture business in Glasgow has announced it will permanently close its showroom at the end of this month. Hampton & McMurray, established in 1952 and known for selling branded homewares such as sofas and beds, has launched a massive clearance sale ahead of the closure.
Closure Details
The showroom, located at 134 Renfrew Street, will shut down forever by the end of June 2026. Three staff members have been made redundant. The company's website states that all stock must go, with discounts of up to 80 percent off everything.
Reasons for Closure
Owners, the Richardson Family, who have run the firm since 1984, cited the evolution of Glasgow city centre as the primary reason. Disruptions from roadworks, traffic restrictions, and high parking costs have made it challenging for customers to visit. Managing director Neil Richardson told The Herald that for businesses dealing in bulky goods, it has become increasingly difficult for consumers to come into the city. He criticised the council for not providing enough support, despite contacting them about rates assistance and relief during nearby renovation works.
Mr Richardson noted that while ongoing work on Sauchiehall Street and Cambridge Street looks great, it has left many empty units, making the area unappealing to tourists and customers. He added that higher energy costs and declining footfall over the past five years have also weighed on the business, with fewer shoppers leading to fewer sales.
Impact on Glasgow's High Street
Hampton & McMurray is the latest retailer to leave the Sauchiehall Street area, following the loss of BHS, Dunnes, and Watt Brothers. Other recent closures include Quiz Clothing, which is shutting all remaining stores by the end of this month, and The Bon Accord whisky bar, which closed on May 23 after its lease expired. TFG London, owner of Phase Eight, has also confirmed it may close underperforming stores, with two branches in Glasgow.
Despite the closure, the Richardson Family will continue operating their Hunter Furnishing Business in Ayr.
