Lidl's USA snacks taste test: American and Brit share verdict

Lidl's recent 'Flavour of the Week' promotion focused on American snacks, offering a range of sweet and savoury items. A British journalist and her American colleague sampled the selection to see which products lived up to expectations.

The chocolate brownie milkshake was the biggest disappointment, with both testers finding it nearly undrinkable. Despite being marketed as chocolate flavoured, the drink contained only 1% cocoa powder and left a chemical aftertaste reminiscent of diluted cake batter.

Mac and cheese flavoured crisps also failed to impress, with an artificial cheese taste and an odd creamy flavour. However, the texture and crunch were praised as a saving grace. The buttermilk ranch dip was deemed average, tasting more like a garlic dip than ranch, while the jalapeño popper dip surprised both testers with its flavour.

The hazelnut stuffed cookies were described as pleasant but cheap tasting, with something 'not quite right' about them. The peanut pretzel sticks were a hit, with both testers finding them crunchy and addictive, and the chilli and lime tortilla rolls were also well received.

Overall, the standout item was the jalapeño popper dip, which both testers said they would buy again. The milkshake was the clear loser, with one tester suggesting it 'should be illegal'.
