Pizza Society, a popular pizza takeaway in Gateshead's Team Valley area, will close its doors on Friday, June 26, 2026, leaving regular customers devastated. The takeaway, which earned a 4.9/5 Google rating and numerous five-star reviews, announced the closure on Instagram on June 22.
Background and Rise to Fame
Pizza Society opened in autumn 2024, taking over the former Cookie Freaks location, which itself had gained fame on TikTok. Within weeks of opening, Pizza Society amassed a wealth of five-star reviews, driven by social media buzz. Its viral Dole whip ice creams also garnered positive feedback.
The owners, father-daughter duo Kieron and Macy, started their hospitality journey in 2019 with cookie pies sold at Tynemouth Market. During the 2020 lockdown, demand for their bakes surged, enabling them to open their first shop. They operated as Cookie Freaks for five years before transitioning to Pizza Society for the last 18 months.
Announcement and Reaction
In an Instagram statement, Kieron and Macy wrote: “Our journey into hospitality started back in 2019, when we created the first cookie pies & sold them at Tynemouth Market. Then came lockdown in 2020, & with it a demand for our bakes we never expected. That’s what eventually gave us the resources to open our first shop.”
They continued: “We’ve been in our Team Valley location for 5 years now, first as Cookie Freaks & then as Pizza Society for the last 18 months. In that time the feedback from you for our pizzas has been amazing, & we’re incredibly proud of our 4.9/5 Google rating. But the time has come for a change, & we’re stepping away from hospitality to focus on new ventures.”
The announcement prompted an outpouring of disappointment from regulars. One commented: “Ah no! We absolutely love your pizzas - we have not ordered from anywhere else after we first tried yours. Gutted but all the best for the future!” Another wrote: “Gutted, we loved a pizza society in the office. Best of luck in the future.”
Future of the Premises
Kieron and Macy revealed that another independent pizza business from the North East would take over the premises “very soon.” They added: “We won’t spoil the surprise of who it is, but we’re delighted to be handing the keys to another local business.”
The closure marks the end of a popular chapter for Team Valley, but the owners expressed gratitude for the support they received over the years.
