Tesco Clubcard Overtakes Asda as Cheapest for Big Shop, Which? Reveals

Asda has lost its position as the UK's cheapest supermarket for a large shop for the first time in over a year, according to new analysis by consumer group Which?. The monthly price comparison of eight major supermarkets found that Tesco, when using a Clubcard loyalty discount, now offers the lowest average price for a basket of 228 items.

In January, Tesco with Clubcard scored an average total of £588.96, edging out Asda at £590.41. Sainsbury’s and Morrisons followed with their loyalty schemes, while Waitrose was the most expensive at £679.20. Sainsbury’s without Nectar points cost £659.85. Aldi and Lidl were excluded from this longer list due to their smaller product ranges.

However, on a shorter list of 89 grocery items, Aldi remained the cheapest at £164.74 in January, followed by Lidl (£166.33 with Lidl Plus, £166.53 without). Tesco with Clubcard was next at £182.92, and Waitrose again topped the chart at £221.53—34% higher than Aldi. Which? named Aldi the cheapest supermarket of 2025, as it held the top spot for 10 out of 12 months.

An Asda spokesperson defended the retailer, stating it was the lowest-priced supermarket every month in 2025 on the big trolley comparison and £50 cheaper in January on a like-for-like basket without loyalty pricing. They emphasised Asda remains the best value for the big family shop with prices available to all.

Which? retail editor Reena Sewraz noted that while Aldi leads, Lidl remains a strong money-saving choice. She added that Tesco's Clubcard offers good value for those seeking branded products, but urged Tesco to ensure under-18s and others ineligible for the card do not miss out on savings.
