Arsenal Eye Free Transfer for Oscar Mingueza
Arsenal are reportedly leading the chase to sign Celta Vigo defender Oscar Mingueza on a free transfer this summer, with manager Mikel Arteta personally driving the pursuit. The 27-year-old's contract expires at the end of June, making him an attractive option for the Premier League champions as they look to bolster their right-back position.
According to Spanish publication AS, Arsenal have been made aware of a potential move for the Spain international, who is expected to leave Celta after four years at the club. The Gunners face competition from Aston Villa, Juventus and Newcastle, but are said to be 'leading the pack' for Mingueza, who is keen to move to England.
Arteta's 'Finishers' Philosophy
Arteta has built a culture at the Emirates based on unity and commitment, where every player, whether starting or coming off the bench, is expected to make an impact. He frequently refers to 'finishers' and 'impacters' – players who can change a game when introduced as substitutes. Following Arsenal's 1-0 aggregate Champions League quarter-final victory over Sporting Lisbon, Arteta praised his bench: "It's been the story of the season, how important the finishers have been for us, to achieve what we want. And today, all of them - Gabi [Martinelli] came on and made a huge impact; Kai [Havertz] the same; Max [Dowman] the same."
This philosophy aligns with Mingueza's potential role at Arsenal. The right-back could serve as a backup to Jurrien Timber, but with the Dutchman managing his fitness, there will be opportunities for Mingueza to start or make an impact from the bench.
Injury Record and Durability
Mingueza's fitness record is exceptional. He has missed only eight league matches over the past three seasons, with just one of those absences due to injury. This durability is precisely what Arteta demands from his players, especially given the defensive injuries Arsenal have endured in recent campaigns.
The former Barcelona youth product, who came through La Masia, has earned four caps for Spain and was part of Luis de la Fuente's squad that reached last year's Nations League final. Despite consistent performances for Celta, he was overlooked for the 2026 World Cup squad, meaning he will arrive fresh for pre-season when his contract expires on 30 June.
Financial Benefits
With a market value of £15 million according to Transfermarkt, signing Mingueza on a free transfer represents a significant saving. If Arteta can sell Ben White – whose future at the club is uncertain amid interest from other Premier League sides – for a sizeable fee, those funds could be redirected to other priority areas, such as a left-winger. Arsenal have been linked with Morgan Rogers and Bradley Barcola.
Securing Mingueza would be a shrewd move for Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta. The defender's solid resale value and outstanding injury record make this a straightforward decision for the newly-crowned champions as they aim to build an even more formidable squad.
