Manchester United are unfazed by reports linking Benjamin Sesko with a move to Barcelona, with the club insisting the striker is not for sale after just one season at Old Trafford. The 23-year-old Slovenian international joined United from RB Leipzig last summer for £73 million and has impressed in his debut campaign, scoring 12 goals and forming a strong bond with head coach Michael Carrick.
Barcelona's Interest in Sesko
Reports in Spain have suggested Barcelona view Sesko as a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who is now 37. However, United sources have expressed bemusement at the speculation and have no intention of selling the forward. The only change in his status this summer could be a shirt number switch from No. 30 to the No. 9 vacated by Rasmus Hojlund, who made his move to Napoli permanent for £38 million.
Sesko's Impact and Development
Sesko started only six of 17 Premier League games under Carrick but made a significant impact off the bench, eventually forcing his way into the starting lineup. Speaking towards the end of the season, he said his first year was about getting "used to the league" and that he was improving steadily. Carrick praised his work ethic and desire, saying: "Ben is making big improvements... He's desperate to do well. He works so hard, he thinks about it an awful lot. He’s an absolute pleasure to work with."
United's Transfer Strategy Vindicated
United signed Sesko ahead of Ollie Watkins last summer, a decision that now appears shrewd. Watkins would have been a short-term solution, but Sesko is seen as a long-term answer. The club's director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, championed the move, and Barcelona's interest is viewed as confirmation that United have secured a top talent. Carrick added: "Working closely with him and connecting with him, building that relationship and that trust... He's a good player. That's why he's here, he has some great strengths."
No Chance of a Deal
With Sesko under contract and United planning for him to play a bigger role next season, there is no chance of a deal with Barcelona. The club is confident that Sesko's best years lie ahead at Old Trafford, and his continued development under Carrick will be key to United's ambitions.
