Film director Quentin Tarantino was spotted at the Parkgate Hotel in Cardiff over the weekend, not long after relocating to the UK to produce his debut stage play, The Popinjay Cavalier. The Kill Bill director was at the hotel with a film crew, which hosted events on Friday night, according to Wales Online.
Historic Charm Meets Modern Luxury
The Parkgate Hotel, located on Westgate Street next to the Principality Stadium, occupies two historic Grade II-listed buildings: the former Head Post Office and the old County Court. These Portland stone structures blend early 20th-century grandeur with modern luxury, featuring soaring ceilings, beautiful stonework, and restored period details. The hotel was named Hotel of the Year in Wales in 2024 and is regularly listed among the best hotels in Wales.
Of the 170 bedrooms, no two are the same, each styled around the building’s original features. The calming colour palette includes deep blues, soft greys, muted greens, and warm tan leather, with large upholstered headboards. Amenities include Elemis toiletries, bathrobes, a 49-inch television, and free WiFi. Some rooms offer balconies with city views or direct views of the Principality Stadium.
Rooftop Spa and Dining
The sixth-floor rooftop spa, recently refreshed as an OSKIA spa, features two saunas, a large thermal pool with jets, heated loungers, and floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic city views. Spa access is available in 90-minute slots, with treatments including the OSKIA Bespoke Warm Oil Massage, described as a restorative full-body treatment using warmed oils and Eastern-inspired techniques.
The Sorting Room, the hotel’s two AA Rosette Awarded and Michelin Guide-listed restaurant, offers a wide-ranging menu of British dishes. In 2022, it was included on the Michelin Guide's Inspectors' Favourite New Restaurants list. Dishes include Grilled Black Tiger King Prawns, Beef Wellington, and British Fallow Venison. Starters like the Monmouthshire-reared pork and chorizo Scotch egg come with a perfectly jammy egg and Bloody Mary sauce. Mains include Welsh lamb and thirty-five-day dry-aged Welsh beef rump, cooked with precision. Sides like triple-cooked Maris Piper chips and Welsh whisky peppercorn sauce complement the meal.
The Gatsby-esque bar serves cocktails such as the Welsh Negroni, made with Celtic Collection gin, Martini Rosso vermouth, and Campari. An Aperol Spritz costs £16.
Filming Location and Celebrity Appeal
The hotel has been a filming location for BBC’s The Guest and the 2024 Christmas special of Gavin and Stacey, where Sonia’s hen party took over the Telegraph Suite. Tarantino’s recent visit has added to its celebrity appeal.
Prices start from £97 per night. For more information, visit www.theparkgatehotel.wales.
