Ex-La Liga Star Koke Jailed for Drug Trafficking: 'I Earned Six Times My Football Wage'
Former footballer Koke sentenced for leading drug cartel

The dramatic fall from grace of a former La Liga footballer has been laid bare, as Sergio 'Koke' Contreras Pardo serves a prison sentence for leading a significant drug trafficking operation. The 42-year-old, who once thrilled fans in Spain, France, Greece, and the USA, now admits his criminal enterprise earned him multiples of his football salary, though he insists: "I'm not Pablo Escobar."

From Football Pitch to Cartel Leader

Koke's professional journey began at his hometown club, Malaga, in southern Spain. His talent took him to Olympique de Marseille, where he reached the UEFA Cup final in 2004. He later became a club legend at Aris Thessaloniki in Greece, making over 170 appearances, with further spells at Sporting CP in Portugal and MLS side Houston Dynamo before retiring in 2017.

However, just two years after hanging up his boots, his life took a dark turn. In 2019, he was arrested in his hometown of Malaga as part of a major police operation. Koke confessed to heading a drug ring that dealt in marijuana, cannabis resin, and cocaine, purchasing large quantities for smuggling across Europe.

A Lucrative But Dangerous "Business"

In a 2021 interview with Canal Plus, Koke revealed the stark financial incentive behind his crimes. "In the other business, you earn in two months what you can earn in a year in football," he stated. He clarified this further, claiming the illicit activities brought him six times more than his football wage. "But you're risking your life," he added.

The former forward was keen to distance himself from the most infamous drug lord imagery. "I have contacts everywhere, but I'm not Pablo Escobar!" he said. "When you hear that 'international trafficker' thing, you say to yourself: What the hell have I done?"

Plea Deal and Prison Time

Initially facing a potential 16-year sentence, Koke's case concluded at the Provincial Court of Malaga in May 2023. He negotiated a plea deal with prosecutors, resulting in a six-year prison term. He and 16 co-defendants also received substantial fines.

Having spent nearly two years in pre-trial custody before being released on bail in 2021, Koke returned to prison in 2023 to serve the remainder of his sentence. He is expected to be released in 2027.

Reflecting on his time behind bars, Koke noted that his football fame offered no special protection. "I knew everyone, but being a footballer doesn't change anything [in prison]," he said. He recounted seeing Marseille shirts in prison and acknowledged the dangers, but claimed a lack of fear.

"Prison is open to stupid people. I'm going back to prison, I don't know for how long... Going to prison isn't the worst thing in the world," he stated. He expressed a desire for societal reintegration, saying, "I would like to convey to society that we are normal people... everyone deserves a chance."
