Masked Gang Armed with Gun Storms Anfield Post Office in Failed Robbery Attempt
A masked gang, reportedly armed with a firearm, stormed a post office in Anfield, Liverpool, in a brazen daylight robbery attempt that left a female staff member threatened but unharmed. The suspects fled the scene empty-handed, prompting a major police manhunt across Merseyside.
Details of the Terrifying Incident
The incident occurred at approximately 11am on Wednesday, 21 January, at the Breck Road post office branch. According to Merseyside Police, three males entered the premises and attempted to take cash. During the confrontation, it was reported that the suspects were armed with a possible firearm and directly threatened a member of staff.
The gang, described as wearing all dark clothing and face coverings, left the post office without securing any money. They were seen fleeing on foot towards a dark coloured Audi, which was parked in the nearby Home Bargains car park at the rear of the building, before driving away from the area.
Police Appeal for Witnesses and Information
Detective Inspector Paula Jones, leading the investigation, emphasised the seriousness of the crime and the urgency of the appeal. “An investigation is ongoing to find the people responsible and we are appealing for anyone with information to come forward,” she stated.
“Thankfully the staff member was unharmed, but she was understandably shaken by the incident. To threaten someone who is simply doing their job is appalling and will not be tolerated.”
Given that the attempted robbery took place in broad daylight, police believe there would have been numerous pedestrians and motorists in the vicinity who may have witnessed the event or noticed suspicious activity. Authorities are conducting extensive witness and CCTV inquiries, vowing to leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of the suspects.
Post Office Response and Community Impact
A Post Office spokesperson confirmed the attempted armed robbery, noting it occurred at 11.07am. “We are supporting the operator of this branch and their staff,” the spokesperson said, urging anyone with information to contact the police or Crimestoppers anonymously.
The brazen nature of the attack, occurring in a busy urban area during daytime hours, has raised concerns about public safety and criminal audacity in the Anfield community. The swift police response and ongoing manhunt underscore the determination to apprehend those responsible and prevent similar incidents.
Residents and local businesses are being encouraged to remain vigilant and report any relevant details to Merseyside Police as the investigation continues to unfold.
