Police Warn Parents After Child Hurt in Urbex Stunt

Police have issued a warning to parents after a child was seriously injured while taking part in a growing social media trend known as 'urban exploration' or 'urbex', where participants break into derelict buildings and film themselves inside for online platforms.

Incident at Saracens Head Pub

The incident occurred inside the disused Saracens Head pub on Paddock Lane near Dunham Massey, Altrincham. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that the child suffered serious injuries from a fall within the property. This is part of an increasing trend of young people entering abandoned buildings, according to authorities.

Police Letter to Parents

Inspector Matthew Harvey, of GMP's neighbourhood policing team in Altrincham, has sent a letter to parents via local schools to raise awareness. He wrote: "I am writing to make parents and carers aware of a growing trend among young people known as 'Urban Exploring' or 'Urbex'. Urban exploring involves individuals entering and exploring abandoned, derelict, disused or vacant buildings and sites."

Inspector Harvey highlighted that social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat have popularised this activity, often portraying it as exciting or harmless. However, the reality can be very different, with increasing reports of young people entering unsafe locations across Trafford, Greater Manchester, and the wider region.

Risks of Urban Exploration

The risks include falling through unstable floors, roofs, and staircases. Inspector Harvey noted: "Many sites may appear abandoned but can contain hidden dangers that are not immediately obvious. Social media content often fails to show the real risks involved and can encourage others to imitate dangerous behaviour in pursuit of views, likes and online recognition."

Urban explorers have previously visited sites like the former Coronation Street set in Manchester city centre and Stretford mall. Footage and pictures posted on TikTok, seen by the Manchester Evening News, show an urban explorer inside the Saracens Head pub, walking around customer areas, behind the bar, and even a soft play area. The footage does not show any fall, and it is not known if it is connected to the incident.

Call to Parents

Inspector Harvey urged parents to speak with their children about the dangers of urban exploring and to take an active interest in their whereabouts, especially during evenings, weekends, and school holidays. He also encouraged discussing responsible social media use and the influence of online trends on decision-making. "By working together, we can help keep our young people safe and prevent serious injury or harm," he added.
