Mould, mildew, and bacteria can cause unpleasant smells in your washing machine, but a simple one-second hack can prevent this. Opening the detergent drawer after each cycle improves ventilation and prevents odours, according to experts.
Why Opening the Detergent Drawer Matters
The damp environment inside a washing machine creates a breeding ground for mould. While many homeowners know to leave the door open after a wash, few realise that opening the detergent drawer is equally vital. This reinforces the effectiveness of opening the main door, as the pipes inside the machine gain better breathability. Opening the drawer also helps it dry more quickly, preventing mould development.
Additional Tips for Drying
Homeowners can even pull out the drawer entirely and leave it on the side or top of the machine for better drying. For those who simply leave the drawer pulled out, it is recommended to do so for at least a few hours, though the longer the better. Good Housekeeping also advises using a cloth to wipe residual moisture from the washing machine door's rubber seal, a common spot for mould. The same cloth can then be used to dry the inside of the drawer, where puddled water often collects and mould can grow.
Regular Cleaning Still Necessary
Despite these measures, your washing machine still needs a regular, thorough cleaning. This can be done with an empty hot-wash cycle at a recommended temperature of 60 degrees or higher, or using a dedicated self-clean cycle. Washing machine cleaner can also be purchased and run through the machine every three to six months.
Bad Habits to Avoid
Bad habits that contribute to odours include overdoing detergent, leaving wet clothes in the machine for too long, and failing to clean it regularly. Placing extremely dirty items like sandy towels, muddy clothes, or dog-hair-covered blankets can also be dangerous for your washer. Always shake out such items before loading. Additionally, check pockets before washing hoodies, jeans, or trousers, and ensure zippers are done up to prevent damage to other fabrics.
