South Ayrshire nursery praised for 'significant strengths' after unannounced spot check. The Early Years Centre (EYC) was graded 'very good' across three quality indicators relating to leadership, children's play and learning, and supporting children to achieve.
Barrhill Early Years Centre, based on Main Street in Barrhill, was placed under the microscope during an unannounced spot check by the Care Inspectorate in May, with results now published. The service is registered to provide care to a maximum of 10 children not yet attending primary school at any one time. Operated by South Ayrshire Council, the centre is located within Barrhill Primary School near Girvan.
Key Findings from the Inspection
Among the key messages, the Care Inspectorate said leaders had created a 'clear and shared vision' which was 'well embedded' in practice. Children were described as 'highly engaged, motivated and confident' learners who benefited from 'rich, meaningful play experiences' that reflected their interests and supported their curiosity and development.
Staff interactions were 'consistently warm, responsive and skilful,' and children experienced 'high-quality nurturing care' with 'sensitive support' during routines and transitions. Strong, trusting relationships with families enhanced children's care and wellbeing, with effective communication and a flexible approach that responded to family needs.
Area for Improvement
The Care Inspectorate recommended that the service strengthen approaches to observation, planning, and personal planning to 'better capture' children's learning and ensure 'consistent, sustained progress for all children.'
An extract from the report stated: 'We found significant strengths in aspects of the care provided and how these supported positive outcomes for children. Children were highly engaged in their play and learning. They were confident, motivated and clearly enjoyed their experiences across the setting.'
