Countryfile host Adam Henson made a candid farming admission during the latest episode of the beloved BBC show, despite being a farmer himself. The 60-year-old presenter, who joined the programme in 2001, visited The Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight, Britain's largest garlic cultivator.
A Surprising Revelation
During Sunday evening's instalment (June 6), Henson toured the family-run farm, which has been growing garlic for over 50 years since Granny Norah first planted cloves in her garden. The Boswell family, who own and operate the farm, showed Henson their crops and explained that they have stretched garlic in every direction, producing 30 products including garlic beer and garlic ice cream.
While helping harvest elephant garlic stalks, which were described as resembling asparagus with a garlic flavour, Henson learned that each plant originates from a single garlic clove. He confessed: "It all comes from one clove? Well there you go, I'm a farmer and I didn't know that."
A Remarkable Achievement
Later, Henson joined the family for a lunch featuring freshly harvested garlic stalks and a variety of garlic-infused ingredients. Reflecting on their efforts, he told them their work was "quite extraordinary" and "a remarkable achievement." The family matriarch expressed pride that her relatives had embraced the responsibility of managing the farm, and Henson noted they were "not lacking in enthusiasm."
A Sweet Surprise
At the programme's conclusion, co-hosts Joe Crowley and Margherita Taylor reunited without Henson. However, Joe revealed that Henson had sent them a modest present: a small pot of ice cream. As they sampled it, they confessed it was 'delicious' but couldn't identify the flavour beyond a chocolate taste. It was then disclosed that they were eating black garlic and chocolate ice cream, which didn't deter them as they continued savouring the dessert as the credits rolled.
Countryfile continues on Sundays on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
