Suranne Jones has been spotted on set for the upcoming BBC historical drama Gentleman Jack, dressed in full Victorian regalia. The 40-year-old actress, known for her role in Doctor Foster, was filming in York on Monday alongside co-star Joe Armstrong.
Jones wore a top hat and a Victorian-style gown, complemented by a suede tuxedo maxi jacket and black pointed boots. Armstrong, also 40, stood out in an elaborate top hat and a royal blue jacket with gold paneling. The pair appeared in high spirits, joking between takes.
The drama is based on the true story of Anne Lister, a 19th-century Yorkshire heiress determined to marry her female lover, Ann Walker. Lister, often called the 'first modern lesbian', kept coded diaries that were decoded in the 1980s. The series follows her romance with Walker, which began in 1832, a time when homosexuality was both a crime and a taboo.
Gentleman Jack reunites Jones with writer Sally Wainwright, who previously worked with her on Scott and Bailey. Jones praised the scripts as 'fresh, daring and bizarre in a wonderful, modern, fun, complex, challenging way'. Wainwright added, 'Bringing Anne Lister to life is an epic challenge.'
