Ruben Amorim, who was dismissed as Manchester United head coach at the start of 2026, may be set for his first job since then at AC Milan. Reports suggest he could join forces with former United interim manager Ralf Rangnick at the Italian club.
Amorim's Potential Move to AC Milan
Amorim has been out of work since his explosive exit from Old Trafford following a 1-1 draw with Leeds United. He criticized the United board in a post-match press conference, insisting he was the manager, not a coach. Now, he is understood to be the favorite to take over at AC Milan, who parted ways with Massimiliano Allegri at the end of the season.
The Athletic reports that Amorim has held talks with the Italian giants. They had considered Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola, but the Spaniard was hired by Liverpool. Other candidates include Oliver Glasner, Mauricio Pochettino, and Sebastian Hoeness.
Rangnick's Possible Role
Ralf Rangnick, currently manager of Austria, is reportedly being considered for a 'head of football' role at Milan. The club has interviewed him, and if appointed, he would work closely with Amorim. This pairing would be intriguing given both have strong football philosophies: Amorim's 3-4-3 formation and Rangnick's Gegenpressing style. Both struggled to implement their tactics at Manchester United.
Rangnick's initial plan at United was to manage until the end of the 2021-22 season and then take a consultancy role, but that did not materialize. Amorim's final words at United were: 'That is my job, not to be a coach. If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticisms of everything, we need to change the club.'
It remains to be seen if these two former United figures can find success together at AC Milan.
