Danny Kelly reveals 'life or death' cancer battle after chemo complications
Danny Kelly shares 'life or death' cancer battle update

Veteran TalkSport presenter Danny Kelly has provided a candid update on his cancer treatment, admitting he was fortunate to survive a "life and death" situation in hospital. The 69-year-old broadcaster apologised to fans for his month-long absence from social media since his last post in May.

Cancer diagnosis and treatment

Kelly first shared his devastating diagnosis on air in March, revealing he had been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer after seeking medical advice for suspected acid reflux. He subsequently stepped away from his presenting duties to undergo chemotherapy.

On social media platform X, Kelly detailed his gruelling treatment journey: "I've done the four blasts of chemo. Each one has been followed by a hospitalisation with side-effects, and worse. After the last chemo, 3 weeks ago, I began to feel worse and worse. Passing in and out of consciousness. A&E in Dublin. They stuck a camera down my throat."

Internal bleeding and emergency intervention

The presenter suffered internal bleeding caused by the shrinking tumour, as well as from two previously undetected ulcers. He explained, "Luckily, that night, both of Ireland's best gut surgeons were on duty. They stopped the bleeding. Couple of days ago, a nurse described their intervention as 'life and death'. I am lucky."

Kelly has since been discharged and is recovering at home. He described his condition as "weak as a kitten, but grateful again for all of your support." He shared a selfie wearing an oxygen mask and another image of himself resting in the hospital ward with headphones on.

Fan support and well wishes

Fans have flooded social media with messages of encouragement. One supporter wrote, "Been thinking of you Danny and wishing you well!! Keep up the good fight and you’ll be back on the airwaves before you know it!" Another added, "Following your journey Danny and just wish you all the best. Your candour gives us a lot of understanding of what you are going through but we can never fully understand." Some fans even shared football updates, noting that Tottenham Hotspur had avoided relegation, hoping it brought a smile to his face.
