Christian Eriksen has issued a statement after collapsing during Denmark's Euro 2020 match against Finland on Saturday. The Inter Milan midfielder, 29, fell to the ground just before half-time and received emergency treatment on the pitch before being taken to hospital.
Eriksen's Statement
In a statement released through the Danish Football Union (DBU), Eriksen said: 'Thank you for your sweet and amazing greetings and messages from all around the world. It means a lot to me and my family. I'm fine under the circumstances. I still have to go through some examinations at the hospital, but I feel okay. Now, I will cheer for the boys in the Danish national team in the next matches. Play for all of Denmark.'
Medical Response
The quick response of the medical staff and players was widely praised. Denmark's team doctor, Morten Boesen, confirmed that Eriksen had suffered a cardiac arrest and was 'gone' before being resuscitated. Boesen stated: 'He was gone. We did cardiac resuscitation, it was a cardiac arrest. How close were we to losing him? I don't know, but we got him back after one defib, so that's quite fast.'
Support from the Football Community
Footballers and fans worldwide have sent messages of support. The match was suspended for over an hour before resuming, with Finland winning 1-0. Denmark's captain, Simon Kjaer, was instrumental in ensuring Eriksen received immediate attention and comforted his teammate's family on the pitch.
Eriksen's Future
Eriksen's future in football remains uncertain as he undergoes further tests. The incident has sparked discussions about cardiac screenings and emergency protocols in sports. The DBU has requested privacy for Eriksen and his family during his recovery.
