EastEnders icon Jessie Wallace has left fans stunned with her transformation from Kat Moon to music hall legend Marie Lloyd in a period drama that viewers are calling a 'masterclass'. The actress, who has portrayed the feisty Kat since 2000, swapped Walford for 1800s London in the biographical film 'Miss Marie Lloyd'.
A Soap Legend's New Role
Jessie Wallace has been a staple of EastEnders for over two decades, captivating audiences as Kat Moon. From her arrival on Albert Square with the Slater clan to her tumultuous romance with Alfie Moon (Shane Richie), Kat has been at the heart of many iconic storylines. However, in 2007, Wallace took on a very different role in the BBC Four biopic 'Miss Marie Lloyd', which explores the life of the renowned Edwardian music hall performer.
The Film: 'Miss Marie Lloyd'
Written by Martyn Hesford, the drama showcases some of Marie Lloyd's most famous songs, including 'My Old Man Said Follow The Van' and 'A Little Of What You Fancy Does You Good'. The film paints a poignant picture of public triumph and private heartbreak, delving into Lloyd's scandalous personal life that often made headlines in the popular press.
Wallace appears almost unrecognisable in the role, swapping Kat's leopard print for elaborate ringlet curls, sweeping gowns, and extravagant headwear. The cast also includes Richard Armitage as Percy Courtney, Annette Badland as Nelly Powers, and Shaun Parkes as The Showman.
Fan Reactions
Fans have been quick to praise Wallace's performance. On Instagram, one viewer commented: 'A wonderful drama and you were brilliant playing Marie.' Another wrote: 'You were absolutely incredible and helped me to fall in love with Miss Marie Lloyd. I watched it over and over again, thank you.' A third added: 'This was a sheer masterpiece and masterclass in acting by the wonderful and talented Jessie Wallace.'
