Kanya King, the visionary founder of the MOBO Awards, has died at the age of 58. Her family confirmed that she passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones after a period of illness. King was a pioneering figure in the music industry, celebrated for creating a platform that honored Black music and culture in the United Kingdom.
A Trailblazer in Music
Born in London to Ghanaian parents, King grew up with a deep appreciation for music and a determination to address the lack of recognition for Black artists. In 1996, she launched the MOBO Awards, which stands for Music Of Black Origin. The first ceremony was held at the Grand Hotel in Birmingham and featured a mix of established and emerging talent. Over the years, the awards grew into a major event, showcasing genres such as R&B, hip-hop, reggae, and grime.
King's work extended beyond the awards ceremony. She was a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion in the music industry, often speaking about the need for representation. Under her leadership, the MOBO Awards became a symbol of cultural pride and a launchpad for many artists' careers.
Legacy and Impact
Tributes have poured in from across the music world. Artists, industry figures, and politicians have praised King's contributions. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called her "a true pioneer who changed the face of British music." Musician Stormzy said, "Kanya opened doors for so many of us. Her legacy will live on."
King also established the MOBO Foundation, a charity that supports young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue careers in music. The foundation has provided scholarships, mentorship, and resources to hundreds of aspiring artists.
In 2018, King was awarded an MBE for her services to music and diversity. She continued to lead the MOBO Awards until her retirement in 2024, passing the baton to a new generation of organizers.
Kanya King is survived by her husband, two children, and her siblings. A private funeral will be held, with a public memorial service planned for later this year.
