Liverpool legend Sammy Lee has voiced his support for James Milner to join Andoni Iraola's coaching staff at Anfield. Milner, who retired from football earlier this month after 24 years in the Premier League, spent eight seasons with Liverpool, winning six trophies including the 2019 Champions League and the 2020 Premier League title.
Iraola's New Backroom Team
Liverpool have yet to confirm any appointments alongside Iraola, who signed a two-year deal last week. However, it is understood the Basque coach plans to bring Pablo de la Torre, Tommy Elphick, Shaun Cooper, and Tom Webber to the club.
Lee's Endorsement
Speaking to Redmen TV, Lee, who made nearly 300 appearances for Liverpool between 1977 and 1987, said: "I know Millie from when I was with England Under-21s. He's a very demanding professional, which is great because he tests me all the time. As long as I had the answers for him, it'd be great."
Lee added: "I'd love something like Thiago (Alcantara), but I'd certainly love someone like Millie because he drives standards on and off the pitch. I'm sure if you speak to Jurgen (Klopp), he'll tell you that the likes of Millie and Jordan Henderson drove the ethos, philosophy, and culture."
Reflections on Slot's Departure
Lee, who was part of Roy Hodgson's backroom staff at Anfield in 2010, also commented on Arne Slot's dismissal a year after winning the Premier League title. He admitted he was not a fan of how it happened but understood the decision. "I was not a fan, but I fully understand it. Every performance got worse, and it wasn't Liverpool-esque football," he said.
