Kimi Antonelli demonstrated remarkable maturity after securing his fifth consecutive Grand Prix victory in Monaco, insisting that there is still a long way to go in the Formula 1 season. The 19-year-old Italian driver dominated the prestigious race, leading every lap and holding off Ferrari rival Lewis Hamilton at a red flag restart to cross the finish line first.
Dominant Performance in Monaco
Antonelli's victory in Monaco was his fifth in a row, extending his lead at the top of the Drivers' Championship to 66 points. The teenager's performance was described as 'incredible' by team insiders, with his Mercedes car providing the pace and reliability needed to fend off challenges from Hamilton and other rivals. George Russell, Antonelli's teammate, failed to finish in the top ten after receiving a drive-through penalty for not serving an earlier penalty, which saw him drop out of points contention and be overtaken by Hamilton in the standings.
Antonelli's Humble Reaction
Speaking after the race, Antonelli was quick to put his success into perspective. 'It's been an incredible weekend, incredible race. It was one of those days where we had so incredible pace and it was just coming all so natural,' he said. 'The car was feeling incredible and it just was giving me the confidence to push. So it was a very enjoyable day.' However, the young driver emphasized that there is no room for complacency. 'I mean, the job's not finished. It's still a long season and we've got to keep pushing, keep raising the bar, and the goal is to keep performing like this.'
Antonelli also acknowledged the support he has received from his team and family. 'The team is doing an incredible job. They've given us an incredible car and I've got so much support from the team as well, from my family. So yeah, it's a really good moment so far,' he added.
Red Flag Restart Concerns
The race featured a red flag restart, which Antonelli admitted caused some anxiety. 'To be fair, I wasn't super keen on restarting as well, because I didn't really want to restart, but then once the notification came out, I just gathered my emotions, my thoughts, and I started to focus again,' he explained. 'I looked at some data and so on, and just tried to refocus on restarting and then trying to get the tyres in the right temperature. And then once I got away, I knew I was going to make it into P1 into the first corner, and then from that point on I just enjoyed the last few laps.'
With a 66-point lead after only six races, Antonelli is in a commanding position, but his comments suggest he is fully aware that the championship is far from decided. The next race will be a test of whether he can maintain his momentum and continue to raise the bar.
