Bruno Fernandes Backs Man United Target Rafael Leao After Red Card

Bruno Fernandes has sent a message of support to Portugal team-mate Rafael Leao, after the attacker was sent off during a World Cup warm-up match. The Manchester United captain told Leao, who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer, that they were 'together' following the incident.

Incident Details

Wantaway AC Milan star Leao was given his marching orders after appearing to punch his opponent. Leao looked to intervene in an altercation between Joao Cancelo and Chile's Felipe Faundez, and was caught up with Ivan Roman, whom he repeatedly shoved before striking him in the face. After a VAR review, both players were sent off the field.

Fernandes was in the proximity of the fracas and seems more than happy to have backed his international team-mate ahead of the World Cup.

Leao's Explanation and Fernandes' Response

Leao has attempted to explain his actions and received support from the United star. 'Regarding my expulsion,' Leao posted on Instagram. 'I simply wanted to protect my colleague, never with the intention of hurting the opponent! Thank you to all the Portuguese who came to Jamor, amazing atmosphere, we're still together.'

Fernandes replied to the winger's post with a simple message. The 31-year-old said: 'Together.'

Transfer Speculation

Leao is set to depart AC Milan this summer, and Galatasaray and Fenerbahce have both been credited with interest in the 26-year-old. United and Arsenal have also been tipped as possible destinations, and the former Lille ace has publicly suggested that a move to the Premier League would best suit him.

'I need a new challenge. I already won two trophies in Italy and have been there for a while,' Leao told Portuguese news outlet Sport TV. 'The league is evolving, but for my style of football, I think the Premier League or La Liga would make more of my talent, as a player.'

He added: 'If a Premier League opportunity were to come along, I would be very happy. I think that I can put my talent up against the players there, who are of a very high level. Playing in that kind of a league really gets the best out of a player.'

Milan are reportedly willing to accept £43 million for the forward this summer. Leao has two years remaining on his contract.
