Christian Eriksen's doctor shares positive update after collapse

Christian Eriksen has shared an update on his condition after collapsing during a friendly between Denmark and Ukraine, resharing the details provided by Denmark's national team doctor. The former Manchester United and Tottenham midfielder is with his family and is anticipated to leave hospital shortly.

Doctor's Encouraging Update

Martin Boesen delivered the encouraging update. He said: "I spoke with Christian this morning, and he is doing well. He is with his family and in good spirits. The expectation is that he will be discharged soon and return home. We are taking good care of the players and staff and remain in regular contact with them."

Match Abandoned After Incident

The friendly fixture was abandoned after 65 minutes, immediately after Eriksen received medical attention. His teammates were visibly emotional as the Wolfsburg star experienced a frightening episode for a second time, five years after he collapsed with a cardiac problem during Euro 2020. The 34-year-old was conscious when leaving the pitch in Odense and sufficiently recovered to walk into the ambulance, while fans in the stadium applauded and chanted his name.

Initial Medical Response

After the game, Boesen provided an initial update: "He was briefly out, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him. Now he needs to be examined further at the hospital to find out what caused the incident."

Manager's Emotional Reaction

Denmark manager Brian Riemer spoke of how harrowing the ordeal had been. "It's a really shocking experience for everyone. The most important thing, of course, was initially receiving a report on Christian, which was handled fantastically by Dr. Morten Boesen, who was able to report that Eriksen was fine. That was the most important thing."

Riemer added: "Christian Eriksen waved to his teammates as he left the pitch. A few minutes before he fell ill, he had had a tussle with Ruslan Malinovskyi, and I thought that was why he looked so distressed, but I was wrong. From that moment on, neither I nor the players on the pitch could have carried on with the match."

He went on to say: "I'm looking forward to seeing him. I'm going over to see him now as soon as I have the chance. I need to see him and talk to him, I can feel that. He is a man who has meant a great deal to me. There are some players you become closer to than others, and he was one of those I became close to because of the experience he came with. And since then, we've also worked together with the national team, so he is someone I have a close relationship with and know very well."

Background on Eriksen's Condition

Eriksen had been fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator device, designed to restore a regular heart rhythm, after suffering a cardiac arrest during a match against Finland in 2021. He underwent life-saving resuscitation on the pitch during those traumatic scenes. The ICD device enabled him to return to football, although Inter Milan's regulations surrounding the medical implant prevented him from continuing his career at the club. Eriksen subsequently joined Brentford to relaunch his playing days in February 2022, before going on to represent Manchester United and now Wolfsburg.

Support from Former Clubs

Manchester United revealed their relief over Eriksen's condition on Sunday evening. "Everybody at Manchester United is encouraged by Denmark's update on Christian Eriksen following today's abandoned friendly against Ukraine. The club is sending strength and love to Christian and the Eriksen family as we await further news."
