Couple Names Kids After Pokémon, Sparking Online Debate

A couple who named their son after a Pokémon has sparked a debate after revealing they plan to do the same with their daughter, but not everyone is impressed with their unusual choice.

Pokémon-Inspired Names

Choosing a baby name is no small feat, with most parents spending months deliberating over their options in search of the perfect choice. While some families opt to carry names down through the generations, others draw inspiration from beloved films, books, or even video games. For one couple, their baby name inspiration came from their favorite game — Pokémon. However, not everybody is won over by their rather unconventional decision.

On Reddit, one user wrote: "I just found out one of my friends named her child after a Pokémon and she's planning to do it again. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Pokémon fan myself, but this is just wrong. One of my friends (whom I met over Pokémon GO back when it was popular) had a child around 2 years ago, but I never found out his name — until today."

It turns out the child had been named Zekrom, a Dragon/Electric-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation V and the mascot of Pokémon White. As if that weren't enough, the couple are now keen to give their daughter a Pokémon-inspired name as well, with the user adding: "Now, I know very well that Zekrom is on the milder side of Pokémon names when it comes to that, however, she is having another child — a girl — and wants to name her Reshiram. Needless to say, I totally yelled at her over text and told her that I could let Zekrom slide since it's all said and done, but there is no way in hell that she will name her daughter Reshiram."

Online Reactions

Reacting to the post, one stunned user commented: "Umbreon is my Reddit name but I'd never name my kid that lmao why do ppl name their kids how they would name their cats." Another user added: "My cats have better names than these kids! (Charlie, Kevin, and Percy)." A third user said: "Could be worse; could be Lechonk. At least as far as Pokémon Go, those names are cool. They're still Pokémon, so it's tragic." Yet another user weighed in: "I always say, children are not billboards for fandoms. I saw a video of a woman who named her kid Zuko after a character from Last Airbender. A lady in my naming group on Facebook wanted to incorporate Obi Wan Kenobi into her kid's name because her husband was insisting on it."
