Diane Keaton, the Oscar-winning actress known for her roles in Annie Hall and The Godfather, has died at the age of 79 in California, her family has confirmed. The news has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the entertainment world.
Broadcaster Piers Morgan was among the first to pay tribute, writing on X: 'RIP Diane Keaton, 79. Oscar-winning star of Annie Hall, brilliant in The Godfather and Father of the Bride movies. One of Hollywood’s greatest actresses, and a delightful lady. Sad news.' Singer Nancy Sinatra also described the death as a 'heartbreaking loss', calling Keaton a 'very special person'.
According to a friend who spoke to People magazine, Keaton's health declined suddenly in recent months. 'She declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her. It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit,' the friend said. The source added that even close friends were unaware of the severity of her condition, as her family kept matters private.
Keaton's career spanned decades, earning her an Academy Award, a BAFTA, and multiple Golden Globes, as well as nominations for two Emmys and a Tony. She was also romantically linked to co-stars Woody Allen, Al Pacino, and Warren Beatty.
