Danish footballer Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during Denmark's international friendly against Ukraine on Saturday evening. The 34-year-old Wolfsburg midfielder went down in the 43rd minute at Nature Energy Park in Odense, prompting immediate medical attention.
Immediate Response and Abandonment
Medical staff rushed onto the field as Denmark's players formed a protective circle around their teammate. The match was swiftly abandoned shortly after the incident. According to the Danish Football Association (DBU), Eriksen was conscious and feeling well under the circumstances. He was transported from the stadium in an ambulance for further observation.
Fans inside the stadium broke into chants of support for Eriksen as he received treatment, creating an emotional atmosphere.
Previous Cardiac Arrest
This is not the first time Eriksen has collapsed during a match. In June 2021, during Denmark's opening game of the European Championship against Finland, he suffered a cardiac arrest and required CPR on the pitch. He was resuscitated after ten minutes and later fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) pacemaker.
National team doctor Morten Boesen told Danish television that the pacemaker likely saved Eriksen's life again. "I think it has done what it was put in place to do," Boesen said. He added that Eriksen asked to leave the field himself, which is a very good sign. "Christian is doing well, and he asked me to greet all the players and say that he was okay," Boesen confirmed.
Reaction from Teammates and Pundits
Former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner, working as a pundit for Danish TV channel TV2, fought back tears as he covered the incident. "These are horrible pictures, and it completely overshadows the rest of the evening," Bendtner said. "My thoughts are with the family and the children, and it's a difficult situation to be in right now. This is the second time it has happened, and as Christian's friend also... it's really terrible."

At the time of the abandonment, Denmark was leading 2-1 against Ukraine. Goals from Manchester United's Patrick Dorgu and defender Joakim Maehle had put Denmark ahead, while Viktor Tsygankov had equalized for Ukraine just before the interval. The result of the friendly remains undecided.
Eriksen made a remarkable return to professional football eight months after his 2021 cardiac arrest, joining Brentford before later moving to Manchester United and then Wolfsburg. He continues to play with an ICD device to regulate his heart rhythm.
