Former England striker Emile Heskey has backed Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers to earn a call-up to the senior national team, following a string of impressive performances under manager Unai Emery.
Rogers' Rise at Villa Park
Rogers, 21, joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in January 2024 for a fee that could rise to £15 million. Since then, he has become a key figure in Emery's side, showcasing his versatility and attacking prowess. The young forward has scored crucial goals and provided assists, helping Villa challenge for European places in the Premier League.
Heskey's Endorsement
Emile Heskey, who earned 62 caps for England and played for clubs including Liverpool and Aston Villa, believes Rogers has the attributes to succeed at international level. "Morgan has all the qualities you look for in a modern forward: pace, strength, and a keen eye for goal," Heskey said. "He's been consistent for Villa, and if he continues this trajectory, an England call-up is inevitable."
Comparisons to Former Stars
Heskey drew comparisons between Rogers and himself, noting the importance of physicality and hold-up play. "He reminds me a bit of myself in terms of using his body to shield the ball and bring others into play. But he's also got that extra flair and creativity that makes him dangerous in the final third."
England's Attacking Options
England manager Gareth Southgate has an abundance of attacking talent, including Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, and Phil Foden. However, Heskey argues that Rogers offers something different. "We have many technically gifted players, but Morgan provides a directness and power that could be useful against deep-lying defences. He's not afraid to take on defenders and can score from distance."
Villa's European Ambitions
Aston Villa are currently pushing for a top-four finish, and Rogers' contributions have been vital. Emery has praised the youngster's work ethic and adaptability. Rogers has played across the front line, excelling as a striker, winger, and attacking midfielder. This versatility could be an asset for Southgate's squad.
Heskey concluded: "If Morgan keeps performing like this, he won't just be knocking on the door—he'll break it down. I'd love to see him in an England shirt soon."
