A Pioneering Career
Wilson co-founded Hot Chocolate alongside Errol Brown in 1969, creating a group that would become the first predominantly Black British band to achieve significant success in the United States charts. The band's unique blend of funk, soul, and pop earned them a string of hits, including 'You Sexy Thing', which remains a timeless classic.
Family Announcement
Wilson's daughter broke the news on Facebook, writing: 'Dad left us today, April 24th 2026. He left a lot of music behind...forever and ever.' She expressed gratitude for a recent conversation where he was 'led to the Lord with understanding' and noted his final days were spent in peace. His son Danny also shared a heartfelt tribute, describing the 'emotional weekend' and highlighting his father's dedication to his musical dreams.
Danny revealed that his mother discovered old diaries from 1970 and 1971 that documented the struggles and triumphs of Wilson's early career. 'It is truly staggering. The knock backs, the interviews, the touring, the radio shows, the meticulous documenting of record sales,' Danny wrote. He recalled a trip to Trinidad last year where he and his father reviewed the diaries together, calling it a cherished memory.
Musical Legacy
Beyond Hot Chocolate, Wilson wrote songs for other artists, including Herman's Hermits, Mary Hopkin, and Mavis John, with mentions of possibly working with Ray Charles. His contributions to music have been widely celebrated, with fans and fellow musicians acknowledging his underrated impact. Danny concluded: 'Rest easy dad, God knows you earned it.'
