Idris Elba: World Not Ready for Black James Bond

Sir Idris Elba has stated that audiences around the world are not prepared to see a Black African male take on the role of James Bond. The actor, who was once a fan-favorite to succeed Daniel Craig as 007, insists that the speculation was never grounded in reality.

Idris Elba on Bond Casting Rumors

Speaking to British GQ, the 53-year-old actor explained that the idea of him playing Bond was 'never legit. It was always just a rumour.' He added: 'I've always felt that it's not a realistic thing. James Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it. And also, I think, in realistic terms, some markets just don't go for that.'

While Lashana Lynch made history as the first Black 007 in No Time To Die, Elba believes the world is not ready for a permanent Black male Bond. 'Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won't [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That's not what they like in their culture. Period,' he stated.

Staying True to Bond's Essence

Elba urged the franchise to prioritize escapism over political correctness. 'Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let's not try and make it woke. I think you've got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don't try and answer the world's taste. Just be Bond.'

The debate over changing Bond's ethnicity or gender has persisted for years. Many purists argue the character should remain as originally written by Ian Fleming in 1953: a Scottish man with a Swiss mother. Dame Helen Mirren also weighed in, telling Saga magazine: 'I'm such a feminist, but James Bond has to be a guy. You can't have a woman. It just doesn't work. James Bond has to be James Bond; otherwise, it becomes something else.'

Search for the Next Bond

Rumors have linked actors like Callum Turner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, and Jacob Elordi to the role. Amazon MGM Studios confirmed in May that the search is underway, stating: 'The search for the next James Bond is underway. While we don't plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we're excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right.'

Although Elba will not be the next Bond, he remains busy with upcoming projects including Children of Blood and Bone, Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and the next Luther movie. He was also knighted by King Charles III earlier in June.

The Heroes Issue of British GQ is available via digital download and on newsstands from Tuesday, June 9.
