Jaafar Jackson Reflects on Childhood Memories with Uncle Michael Ahead of Biopic Premiere
Jaafar Jackson has shared heartfelt recollections of his time with his late uncle, the legendary Michael Jackson, in a new interview ahead of the release of the highly anticipated biopic where he will portray the pop icon. The film, titled Michael and directed by Antoine Fuqua, is scheduled for release on April 24, 2026.
Earning the Role and Capturing Michael's Essence
In an interview on Today, Jaafar, aged 29, discussed the intense process of securing the role for his film debut. "It was a process that I really had to earn, and it really proved to the filmmakers and myself and my family that I can get to that point where I can pull it off," he stated. The actor emphasized the responsibility he feels in portraying such an iconic figure, noting the need to capture the true essence of Michael Jackson's persona.
Teasers for the biopic have already showcased Jaafar meticulously replicating his uncle's signature dance moves, adopting his distinctive high-pitched voice, and even performing the famous "hee-hee" vocalizations. Jaafar added, "There's so many moments that I wanted to nail and make sure I had the true essence and that feeling. I had to feel it to make sure I believed in it, first."
Fond Memories of Family Time and Neverland Adventures
Jaafar was only 12 years old when Michael Jackson passed away on June 25, 2009, but he holds vivid and positive memories from his childhood. He recalled regular family gatherings where Michael would visit, describing playful and joyful experiences.
"I remember just growing up, and we would have family time," Jaafar said. "Michael would come over to where I was growing up ... and we'd have some some days where we'd all get together, play family game day. We'd have wonderful times at Neverland and just playing hide-and-go-seek, getting as much candy, going on rides, watching movies. It was all fun."
Biopic Scope and Star-Studded Cast
The producers of Michael have described the film as an in-depth exploration of Jackson's life beyond his music. It traces his journey from his early days as the lead singer of the Jackson Five to his evolution into a global entertainment phenomenon. The narrative aims to provide audiences with unprecedented insights into both his off-stage life and his iconic performances from his early solo career.
The biopic features a notable supporting cast, including:
- Colman Domingo as Jackson's father
- Nia Long as his mother
