Dame Julie Andrews, the beloved star of Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music, celebrates her 90th birthday today, looking as youthful as ever. The Surrey-born actress, who now voices Lady Whistledown in Netflix's Bridgerton, credits a consistent routine—not fanaticism—for her health and happiness.
Andrews has spoken openly about a difficult childhood with an alcoholic mother and abusive stepfather. She has turned to therapy, journaling, and psychoanalysis over the years, telling Oprah Daily in 2019 that 'writing in my diary has helped keep me sane.' She also advised on Business Insider: 'Don't be afraid to seek help.'
Her fitness regimen includes 45 minutes of stretching, aerobics, and ballet barre before evening performances, as she shared on The Rosie O'Donnell Show in 1996. 'I'm not a fanatic about it,' she told the Saturday Evening Post that year, adding that daily singing practice is also part of her routine.
Diet-wise, Andrews favours a high-protein intake with plenty of variety. In the 1970s, she described a 'very high protein diet,' and in 1992 contributed a carrot cake recipe to a celebrity cookbook—using tofu frosting for a healthier, protein-packed twist.
Her hair and makeup approach is simple: 'I wash it daily with the first shampoo that comes to hand,' she told Beauty Plus in 1973, adding that she avoids curlers. Andrews also prioritises family routines, including protein breakfasts and weekly family nights, as she revealed in 2019.
