Sam Thompson announced he would be unable to compete in Sunday's Soccer Aid match on doctor's orders, shortly after an awkward training session with One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson on Friday. The 32-year-old former Made In Chelsea star had been nursing a severe calf injury but still put on an animated display during practice.
Body language expert Judi James analysed the interactions between Thompson and Tomlinson, 33, noting a 'playground mentality' despite their public claims of no hard feelings. Thompson's ex-girlfriend Zara McDermott moved on with Tomlinson shortly after their split in December, and the couple went public in March.
James told MailOnline that while Thompson appeared well integrated with other players, smiling and happy, Tomlinson seemed 'glum' and separate. 'Sam seems to be very much part of the core group, sitting central and being the centre of their attention while Louis walks by looking glum at times and rather peripheral,' she said.
The expert noted Tomlinson's 'hard-looking stare' as he glanced at the group, and an 'unsmiling, reflective-looking gaze' when the two men met on the pitch. 'With his hands on his hips, Louis does look really down and perhaps rather uncomfortable,' James added.
During the group photo, Thompson sat in the centre with a 'playful-looking grin', while Tomlinson offered a 'lip-clamped mouth shape that looks more like a stoic, dampened smile'. Thompson, winner of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!, will still attend Sunday's match as a coach despite being ruled out as a player.
