Nick Mohammed, the comedian known for his alter ego Mr Swallow and roles in Ted Lasso and Intelligence, has become a household name after his dramatic exit in the final of The Celebrity Traitors. Despite fears that viewers would hate him for betraying his fellow contestant Joe Marler, Mohammed's comedic talent has won over audiences.
Mohammed, 45, has long been described as 'comedy's best kept secret', with a career spanning magic, memory feats, and character comedy. His live show Show Pony, which he toured earlier this year, hinted at his involvement in the show. However, rather than winning, Mohammed became infamous for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory alongside rugby player Marler.
His journey to this point has been unconventional. After a PhD in seismology, Mohammed carved a niche with shows featuring his bumptious alter ego Mr Swallow, Houdini spoofs, and a Dracula musical. He gained TV exposure on Miranda, Stath Lets Flats, and his own sitcom Intelligence, but his profile soared with Ted Lasso.
Despite a rocky transition to national treasure status, including a poorly received Bafta appearance and a disastrous West End run of A Christmas Carol(ish), Mohammed has now endeared himself to the public through The Celebrity Traitors. His live work, particularly Show Pony, offers a rare glimpse of the 'real' Mohammed behind the mask.
Fans need not fear his betrayal on the show; as Ed Gamble reported on Traitors Uncloaked, Mohammed worried 'everyone’s going to hate me', but his comedic brilliance ensures he remains beloved.
