ITV's Soldier Soldier Cast: 35 Years On from Grantchester to Game of Thrones
Soldier Soldier Cast 35 Years On: From Grantchester to Game of Thrones

ITV's Soldier Soldier first appeared on screens in June 1991 and it's now celebrating its 35th anniversary. The military drama made its debut on 10 June 1991 and concluded in 1997, but it propelled its ensemble cast to fame. Set in the post-Cold War period, the series rarely showed combat, instead drawing drama from training exercises and exploring how military life impacts intimate relationships.

When audience numbers declined after Jerome Flynn and Robson Green's exit at the end of series five, the show faced cancellation, with its final episode airing on 9 December 1997 following a 12-episode series. But where are the original cast members now, including Welsh actors Peter Wingfield, Robert Gwilym, and Julian Lewis Jones?

Miles Anderson

Miles played Lieutenant Colonel Dan Fortune throughout the first two series, with his character departing the military after a regimental amalgamation and his marriage to journalist Rachel. Miles was already an established performer when he entered the ITV drama, having appeared in works including The Thirty Nine Steps, Sky Bandits and The Legend of Robin Hood. Subsequently, he secured major parts in Holby City and Ultimate Force. The actor has also appeared in Hollywood blockbusters including La La Land, where he portrayed photographer Alistair. The 78-year-old is happily married to Bella Merlin and is father to chef Max Anderson and actor Joe Anderson, who has starred in Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 and Outsiders.

William Gaminara

William appeared in the show's inaugural series, playing Major Harry 'Dickie' Bird in a crucial role during the programme's early episodes before disappearing without any explanation. During his time on Soldier Soldier, William was simultaneously playing Andrew Bower in the BBC medical drama Casualty. Following his departure from the series, the actor landed a prominent role on Silent Witness, portraying forensic pathologist Leo Dalton across 107 episodes. His most recent credit was in The War Between the Land and the Sea, taking on the character of Ted Campbell across three episodes of the Doctor Who spin-off.

David Haig

David was another performer who only appeared in the programme's opening series, with his depiction of Major Tom Cadman best recalled for his cold and loveless marriage to wife Laura. Since featuring in the show, David has built up an enviable catalogue of television and film credits, amongst them Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Thin Blue Line, Keeping Mum and Killing Eve. Nevertheless, his theatrical work remains his greatest legacy, having carved out a reputation as a talented playwright. Most recently, he created and performed in Magic, which examined the extraordinary bond between Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini. David married Jane Galloway in 2010 and is father to five children, including actress Alice Haig, who has played Vicki Fowler on EastEnders since 2025.

Peter Wingfield

Peter took on the role of Lieutenant Nick Pasco in the show's inaugural series, departing quietly after six episodes. Since then, the star's career has flourished considerably, with appearances in Highlander: The Series, the feature film Highlander: Endgame, Cold Squad, Queen of Swords, Holby City and Catwoman. In later years, however, Peter chose to leave acting behind, retraining as a medical professional in the United States. He enrolled at the College of Medicine at the University of Vermont in 2015 and now works as an anaesthesiologist in Los Angeles.

Sean Baker

Sean took on the part of Company Sergeant Major Chick Henwood in the programme's first season. Since the 90s hit series, the actor has appeared in a wide range of productions, including The Bill, Midsomer Murders, Jupiter Ascending and the podcast series Wooden Overcoats.

Robert Glenister

Robert featured prominently in a major storyline during his stint in Soldier Soldier's first series, with his character Colour Sergeant Ian Anderson seeking advancement but facing obstacles after a significant theft occurred at military stores while under his supervision. Robert, sibling of fellow actor Philip Glenister, has carved out a distinguished career since his notable performance, landing leading parts in Hustle, Spooks, Law and Order: UK and Sherwood. While on the show, Robert was married to actress Amanda Redman, although they divorced a year after his stint on the programme. In 1999, he married director Celia de Wolff, and their son, Tom, is an actor known for his work in Trigger Point and Grantchester.

Gary Love

Gary appeared in the programme's first four series, playing Corporal Anthony 'Tony' Wilton. His off-screen death during the fourth series proved a shocking moment for audiences at the time. The actor has since appeared in productions including Essex Boys, Fallen, Casualty and The Bill. The star is married to actress Colette Brown, who has appeared in A Touch of Frost, Torchwood and Sunburn.

Jerome Flynn

Jerome was one of the standout performers in Soldier Soldier, appearing in five series of the show as Corporal Patrick 'Paddy' Garvey. The character departed at the end of the fifth series alongside his long-term companion, David 'Dave' Tucker, played by Robson Green. It wasn't just their on-screen characters who grew close, as Jerome and Robson became firm friends in real life and went on to form their own musical duo, Robson and Jerome, after leaving the show. Their cover of Unchained Melody was the best-selling track of 1995, and both their albums reached No. 1 on the official UK Albums Chart. Jerome has also built an impressive acting career with notable roles in Badger, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Ripper Street and Game of Thrones, where he portrayed Bronn. He previously had a relationship with his Game of Thrones co-star Lena Headey, though the couple parted ways in 2014.

Winston Crooke

Winston played Fusilier Joe Meakin during the show's debut series, though he did not appear in any further episodes. The actor largely stepped back from performing afterwards, turning his attention to athletics representing his native Saint Kitts and Nevis, and in 2021 he served as an officiator at the Tokyo Paralympic Games. In more recent times, however, he has returned to screens, appearing in Christmas in the Caribbean, The Island and Us or Them.

Robson Green

Robson established himself as one of the series' most memorable performers through his five-season portrayal of David 'Dave' Tucker. As noted earlier, Robson was one half of the musical partnership Robson and Jerome. Nevertheless, the actor has built an impressive career on screen, appearing in productions such as Grafters, Wire in the Blood and Grantchester. He is equally well known for his documentary projects, including Extreme Fishing Challenges, Tales from Northumberland and Tales from the Coast. Robson has been married twice — first to therapist Alison Ogilvie, and subsequently to former model Vanya Seager. He and Vanya have a son together named Taylor.

Holly Aird

Holly portrayed Corporal Nancy Thorpe throughout the show's first three seasons, most notably through her romantic storyline with Paddy Garvey, before gradually being written out as the programme progressed. Following her exit, Holly went on to feature in productions including Dressing for Breakfast, Waking the Dead, Scenes of a Sexual Nature and Hijack. She married actor James Purefoy in 1996, although the couple separated in 2002. Two years later, she wed fellow actor Toby Merritt.
