Sarah Platt Murder Reveal: Tina O'Brien on Leaving Coronation Street
Tina O'Brien on Sarah Platt's Murder Future in Coronation Street

Coronation Street fans are questioning Sarah Platt's future in Weatherfield after the June 22 episode revealed she killed Theo Silverton. The shocking twist came during a dramatic dinner party hosted by Sarah and her partner DC Kit Green, where flashback scenes showed Sarah striking Theo with a metal pipe, causing him to fall from scaffolding to his death.

The Murder Reveal

Theo's body was discovered by Betsy Swain in April on the night of her mother Lisa Swain's wedding to Carla Connor. Initially, the identity of the victim was kept secret, with five possible victims teased. A week after the wedding, Theo was confirmed as the victim after he tried to torment Todd one last time. The murder investigation had six suspects: Todd, George Shuttleworth, Summer Spellman, Christina Boyd, Gary Windass, and Danielle Silverton. However, the June 22 episode revealed Sarah as the true killer.

In the flashback, Sarah received a suspicious text from Todd's phone and went to Theo's flat. A drunk Theo provoked her, bringing up the son she and Todd lost 21 years earlier. When Theo threatened violence, Sarah grabbed a metal pipe and struck him, causing him to fall to his death. She then called Gary Windass to help cover up the crime.

Tina O'Brien on Sarah's Future

Actress Tina O'Brien, who plays Sarah, shared her excitement about the storyline. She said: "There was a lot of debate in the green room as soon as we were told there was going to be a murderer. A lot of people were playing Cluedo. First off, some of the cast were told they were involved in the storyline, but they weren't the murderer. So by the time it got to me to go for my meeting, I was a bit like, I think it's me!"

O'Brien added: "But I genuinely didn't worry, at the end of the day, this job is incredible, but to be an actor is not necessarily a job for life. So, I just was really excited to be given the honour of being the murderer, and then hopefully, however it plays out, I'll enjoy Sarah's arc."

Prison Threat

O'Brien teased that Sarah could face prison time. "The first one she was an accessory! But yeah, absolutely, she could be going to prison this time," she said. "If she'd have called the police straight away and explained what happened, she would have been in a much better situation, because it was clearly not premeditated, it was a situation where she felt she had no other choice. But to cover it up, to actively cover something up, she knows that she crossed a line that she can't come back from."

Sarah is determined to avoid prison for the sake of her family. O'Brien explained: "It's not just about her now, it's about her family and her son, and there are times when she can't cope with the pressure and you think she's just going to hand herself in. And then she thinks about her son growing up without a mum, if she's convicted and can't prove she acted in self defence. And because of those things, she's so desperate to do whatever it takes to be part of her family's life."
