Apple TV+ is broadcasting a major British thriller adapted from the mind of bestselling writer Mick Herron. Down Cemetery Road, based on Herron's debut 2003 novel, is being presented as a vital companion to his hugely successful Slow Horses series.
Star-Studded Cast and Plot
The eight-part drama features Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson in a compelling Oxford-set mystery brimming with explosions, conspiracies, and Herron's characteristic dark humour. The narrative begins in a seemingly tranquil Oxford neighbourhood, where a quiet evening is torn apart when a property suddenly explodes. That same night, a young girl vanishes. Local Sarah Tucker (Ruth Wilson) rapidly becomes certain the two events are linked.
Unable to dismiss her concerns, she enlists private investigator Zoë Boehm (Emma Thompson), a woman troubled by her own personal demons, to help piece together what truly occurred. Together, Sarah and Zoë untangle an intricate network of secrets suggesting that individuals long believed deceased are in fact living while others are being murdered at a disturbing pace.
Comparisons to Slow Horses
Apple TV+ has characterised the production as possessing all the hallmarks of Mick Herron's funny and acerbic writing, describing it as an unmissable companion piece for devotees of Slow Horses. Oscar-winner Emma Thompson leads as Zoë Boehm, a brilliant yet troubled detective, while Golden Globe-winner Ruth Wilson plays Sarah Tucker, the determined neighbour whose doggedness pulls them both into peril.
The cast represents a formidable ensemble packed with award-winning performers and recognisable figures from British screen productions. Alongside Thompson and Wilson, the roster features Adeel Akhtar as Hamza, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Downey, Tom Goodman-Hill as Gerard, Darren Boyd as C., and others.
Unique Identity
Given Herron's standing for incisive espionage fiction, parallels to Apple's acclaimed Slow Horses are inevitable. However, Down Cemetery Road possesses an altogether distinct character. Ruth Wilson told TV Insider: "It gets mad as it goes on and gets more wild and dangerous, and the landscape changes, and in the way it's shot is all wild and brutal in the last three, and it feels like a sort of action movie thriller by the end. That's why it's different to Slow Horses. It's a road movie and it's an odyssey for these two characters, and through it, they're finding things out about themselves as they go."
She added: "It is in the same world and the same humour and wit, but actually structurally, it's quite different."
Critical Acclaim
The source novel garnered considerable critical acclaim, with Audiofile Magazine noting: "Mick Herron skillfully weaves a complex story with interesting snippets of current events. This is the perfect choice for those who like to analyze many layers and false starts as a story unfolds." The Guardian said: "A not-to-be-missed treat. Herron's incisive portraits are as pitch perfect as ever, and even if you've read this series before, it's worth reminding yourself of its excellence."
Down Cemetery Road is currently available to stream on Apple TV.
