Netflix fans have just a few days to watch a critically acclaimed adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice before it departs from the streaming platform. The 2005 film, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, has been hailed as "perfect" by reviewers and audiences alike.
A Beloved Adaptation
Directed by Joe Wright in his feature debut, the film brings Austen's 1813 classic to life with a screenplay by Deborah Moggach. Knightley portrays Elizabeth Bennet, while Macfadyen plays Mr. Darcy. The movie was a commercial success, earning $121.6 million worldwide against a $28 million budget.
Why It's Praised
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an 87% approval rating. Critics have praised the casting, direction, and faithful yet fresh interpretation of the source material. One reviewer noted: "Between the perfect casting, Wright's excellent directing, the memorable romantic moments, and the well-developed themes, it's practically impossible not to fall in love with it." Another added: "With impeccable performances, Pride and Prejudice 2005 shines as a benchmark of breathtaking adaptation."
The Story
Set in late 18th-century England, the story follows the Bennet family as they seek suitable marriages for their five daughters. Elizabeth Bennet meets Mr. Darcy at a ball and initially dislikes him, perceiving him as arrogant. Over time, they clash and spar verbally, but Darcy falls deeply in love, famously declaring: "I love you. Most ardently. Please do me the honor of accepting my hand." Elizabeth eventually reciprocates after discovering his true character.
Time Is Running Out
Fans must watch the film before it leaves Netflix on June 20. After that date, it will no longer be available on the platform.
