The BBC has announced an exciting addition to the cast of its upcoming espionage drama, Legacy of Spies, with Charlotte Ritchie, known for her role in Call the Midwife, joining the ensemble. The eight-part series, produced by The Ink Factory in collaboration with the BBC and MGM+, is based on the works of the late John le Carré, widely regarded as a master of the spy thriller genre.
Star-Studded Cast Unveiled
Alongside Ritchie, the series will feature Hugh Laurie, famed for his performances in The Night Manager and House, and Joe Alwyn, whose recent credits include The Brutalist and The Favourite. Laurie is set to portray Control, the formidable head of the Circus, the secret intelligence agency at the heart of le Carré's universe. Alwyn will take on the role of Jim Prideaux, a seasoned intelligence operative.
Other notable cast members include Anjana Vasan as intelligence analyst Connie Sachs, Charlotte Ritchie as Ann Smiley, and Lee Ross as Inspector Oliver Mendel. Further additions to the ensemble are James McArdle as Percy Alleline, John Dagleish as Roy Bland, and Goran Bogdan as Toby Esterhase. Adam Hugill has been cast as Fawn, a dangerous operative assigned to protect the legendary spy George Smiley.
Adaptation of a Masterpiece
The series is adapted from le Carré's acclaimed novel The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and incorporates elements from his later work, A Legacy of Spies. Written by Stephen Cornwell and Clarissa Ingram, the drama marks the long-awaited return of George Smiley to television. Matthew Macfadyen leads the cast as Smiley, with Charlie Hunnam as intelligence officer Alec Leamas. The supporting cast also features Daniel Brühl, Dan Stevens, Jake Dunn, Ariyon Bakare, and several others.
Behind the Camera
Acclaimed filmmaker Claudia Llosa, an Academy Award nominee and Berlin Film Festival Golden Bear winner, will join lead director and executive producer Michael Lennox as a director on the series. Stephen and Simon Cornwell, executive producers, expressed their excitement: "We are delighted to have Academy Award nominee and Golden Bear winner Claudia Llosa bring her vision and cinematic sensibility to Legacy. Her joining Michael on directorial duties has only compounded what is shaping up to be a truly remarkable production."
They added: "To be reunited with Hugh Laurie and Joe Alwyn as Control and Prideaux is a remarkable privilege as we build out the world of the Circus. It's wonderful to welcome Hugh into a new dimension of the le Carré universe alongside his brilliant portrayal of Richard Roper in The Night Manager, and we're thrilled that Joe, who we first worked with on Ang Lee's Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, is now joining us in this momentous undertaking as well."
Charlotte Ritchie's Journey from Poplar to Espionage
Charlotte Ritchie won over viewers as Nurse Barbara Gilbert, later Barbara Hereward, in Call the Midwife. She appeared in the hit BBC drama between Seasons 4 and 7, from 2015 to 2018. During her time on the show, Barbara became a fan favourite thanks to her warm-hearted nature, cheerful personality, and unwavering dedication to her work as a midwife. Her storyline also saw her marry Reverend Tom Hereward and form a touching friendship with fellow nurse Phyllis Crane. After three successful years on the series, Ritchie departed Call the Midwife to explore new opportunities and challenge herself with different acting roles. Her character Nurse Barbara sadly passed away on the show.
Call the Midwife is available on BBC iPlayer.
