Inside Dilly Carter's Life: From Rarely-Seen Husband to Cancer Battle

With a new series of Sort Your Life Out underway, beloved star Dilly Carter has captured hearts on BBC One. But beyond the screen, her life is a tapestry of personal triumphs and challenges.

Dilly's Rise to Fame and Social Media Influence

Dilly Carter shot to fame in 2021 when she joined Sort Your Life Out on BBC One, alongside Stacey Solomon, carpenter Robert Bent, and cleaner Iwan Carrington. Since then, she has become a firm favourite with viewers, known for her organisational expertise. Off-screen, Dilly boasts a massive following of over 454,000 Instagram fans under the handle @declutterdollies. She uses social media and virtual cleanups to help others organise their homes and offices, extending her impact far beyond television.

Dilly's Adoption Story and Family Background

Born in Sri Lanka, Dilly was adopted in 1983 by an English mother, Freda, and a Sri Lankan father, Deya, who sadly passed away from dementia in 2010 at age 79. In a 2023 interview with MailOnline, Dilly shared, "They rescued me, aged three, from a Sri Lankan orphanage. Abandoned there as a baby, all I had was the metal cot I slept in and an uncertain future." Growing up in Middlesex, she added, "Without Freda, who couldn't get pregnant and was the driving force behind my adoption, I dread to think how my life might have turned out." Speaking to Adoption UK, Dilly described her relationship with her parents as "very functional, but I was never short of love. My parents were working so hard to give me a lovely life, but we didn’t spend a lot of time together."

Dilly's Marriage to Husband Charley

Away from the cameras, Dilly is happily married to her husband Charley, a painter and decorator who builds TV sets. The couple tied the knot in May 2012 on a beach in Bali, and a year later, they welcomed their daughter, Nelly-Reet. Earlier this year, Dilly opened up about their love story on Instagram, recounting how she took a risk 15 years ago by moving to Chicago to be with Charley. She wrote, "No one had ever loved me the way he did since our first relationship at 18. His love was like no other." After reconnecting under tragic circumstances, they decided to marry and spent time in Chicago, Canada, and Australia before settling in Hertfordshire. Dilly reflected, "What a journey. 15 years later, 13 years of marriage and 1 incredible daughter and a HUGE amount of life's ups and downs in-between and here we are."

Dilly's Cancer Battle and Recovery

In 2023, Dilly revealed she had been diagnosed with stage one cancer of the womb after surgery to remove uterine fibroids. She kept fans updated on her recovery, undergoing extensive surgery that lasted nearly six hours to successfully remove the tumour. In February 2025, she candidly discussed her "tough" cancer battle on Lorraine, describing how it affected her while filming the new series of Sort Your Life Out. Dilly said, "I was like, 'Well, okay, this is part of my life. I now just have to deal with this... But at the moment, all I need to do is focus on getting better, getting through this moment, and getting to the end.'" She continued, "Throughout my whole cancer journey, I was working, I was filming. The episode that's come out now was when I was going through treatment, when I was really poorly." Dilly also spoke of survivor's guilt, noting, "It's been an amazing journey, but a tough one, as anyone as a cancer survivor realises. You have this huge amount of survivor's guilt."

Sort Your Life Out airs every Tuesday at 8pm on BBC One, showcasing Dilly Carter's resilience and dedication both on and off the screen.
