Emmerdale Star Matthew Wolfenden and Wife Refused On-Screen Romance

Emmerdale actor Matthew Wolfenden has revealed that he and his wife, co-star Charley Webb, turned down a storyline that would have seen their characters become romantically involved. The 38-year-old, who plays David Metcalfe on the ITV soap, said the couple pleaded with producers not to go ahead with the plot because they did not want to spend even more time together.

Appearing on Friday's This Morning, Wolfenden explained: 'They once suggested that they were going to put our characters together and we thought this would be dreadful, the thought of getting up and doing scenes together we said no please don't put us together. It's nice to go off with our Emmerdale families and then come back to each other.'

Wolfenden and Webb, 30, who plays Debbie Dingle, married earlier this year after 11 years together. They have two sons, Buster, seven, and Bowie, two. The couple announced their surprise wedding in February, telling OK! magazine that guests thought they were attending a party for Webb's 30th birthday.

During the interview, Wolfenden also discussed his character's latest storyline, in which David discovers his estranged wife Tracy had an abortion without his knowledge after he had an affair with Maya, the wife of Dr Cavanagh. He hinted at more drama to come, saying: 'David and Maya will end up together and there's a big storyline coming up for both of them.'

Wolfenden also reflected on a previous storyline where David was diagnosed with testicular cancer, calling it a 'brilliant six months' that led to him being asked to perform in the stage show The Full Monty.
