Kelvin Fletcher Overwhelmed with Grief After Farm Tragedy Strikes
In a deeply emotional episode of the popular ITV series Fletcher's Family Farm, former soap star Kelvin Fletcher was visibly distraught upon making the heartbreaking discovery that his beloved cow Cherry had died unexpectedly. The incident, which aired on Sunday, has left both Kelvin and his wife Liz reeling, as they grapple with the sudden loss of a cherished member of their small herd.
A Heartbreaking Discovery During Evening Rounds
Kelvin made the grim find while conducting his evening rounds on the family farm in Cheshire. In a poignant voiceover, he described the moment he and his son Josh came across Cherry lying motionless on her side. "As the sun fades on our evening rounds, Josh and I are confronted by a sign no farmer ever wants to see," Kelvin shared, his voice heavy with emotion. "Our much-loved cow Cherry is lying motionless on her side."
The realisation that Cherry had passed away was swift and devastating, leaving her six-month-old calf, Ezra, without his mother. This marks the second such tragic farewell for the Fletcher family this series, following the earlier loss of another cow named Sonic.
An Emotional Kelvin Fletcher Expresses His Shock
Visibly upset, Kelvin struggled to process the sudden death. "It's absolutely heartbreaking," he said. "I've no idea at all about what's caused it. I'm just surprised how shocking it is, to be honest, I'm just having a bit of shock." He immediately contacted their veterinarian, Hugo, to arrange for Cherry's collection and a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
Kelvin elaborated on his feelings, stating, "Hugo will do his checks, and hopefully we'll get an answer then as to what's happened, but just absolutely heartbreaking. Completely just bewildering, and we think she was in calf again." He emphasised the significant impact of Cherry's loss, noting, "This is a lot to process. We are such a small herd, and Cherry was most definitely the matriarch. Losing her is a huge blow for us and her calf, Ezra. It's really upsetting. Absolutely gutted."
Prioritising the Herd and Caring for Orphaned Calf Ezra
With the immediate priority being the safety of the remaining herd, Kelvin and Liz moved the other cows into the barn. Liz reflected on the suddenness of the event, saying, "It's just happened so out of the blue, but we'll get them in now. We'll work out what we're gonna do about Ezra, and, yeah, just try and get them all back in the sheds."
She added, "It doesn't feel real about Cherry because it just doesn't make sense. She was absolutely fine this morning, and it's not until we get the post-mortem from the vet that we know what happened." Once the cows were secured, Liz spoke about Kelvin's deep connection to the animals, remarking, "We always joke about it, but with Kelvin, he's completely connected with the cows. He's at one with them. It is gutting."
The Couple's Concerns for Cherry's Calf Ezra
The pair shared their worries for Ezra, the orphaned calf. Kelvin expressed his sorrow, stating, "He's such a lovely calf, it is heartbreaking." Liz chimed in, "This'll be his first night without his mum. I feel like cows know as well, they have a real connection with each other."
She acknowledged the commonality of such tragedies in farming, but noted the unique pain of a first experience. "There'll be farmers on every single farm that have dealt with this, and I'm pretty sure that when they've dealt with it time after time after time, they just know what to do, but when it's your first, it just cuts a little bit deeper," Liz said. Kelvin emotionally added, "It makes it even harder to stomach, really."
Veterinary Diagnosis Reveals Cause of Death
The following morning, veterinarian Hugo delivered the sad news over the phone. Cherry had succumbed to severe, acute bacterial pneumonia. Hugo explained, "It's not like something she would have had for very long. About half of her lungs were completely consolidated. It's a bit unexpected because I was expecting to see a clean set of lungs."
He reassured Kelvin that there was nothing he could have done to prevent the tragedy. "It's just a one-off sort of thing that happens. It's not contagious, it's just a bit shocking," Hugo stated. After advising the Fletchers to wean Ezra onto normal food, Kelvin reflected on the loss.
Kelvin Fletcher's Reflections and Sense of Guilt
Despite the veterinary reassurance, Kelvin was left with a sense of guilt. "She was a healthy cow, and unfortunately, she got pneumonia. I can't help but feel a sense of guilt," he admitted. "You want to learn from your mistakes." The episode poignantly captures the raw emotions and harsh realities of farm life, as the Fletcher family navigates this profound loss.
