A music fan in Australia was left utterly humiliated over the weekend after a public marriage proposal at a live concert in Brisbane went devastatingly wrong.
The On-Stage Moment That Went Viral
During a performance by indie-rock band Bootleg Rascal, a male fan was invited on stage with his girlfriend. He recounted how they had seen the band years prior before getting down on one knee to pop the question. In footage that quickly spread across social media, his partner was seen shaking her head 'no', attempting to pull him up, and then promptly running off the stage. A dejected 'No?' from the man was all that followed before he slumped over in clear disappointment.
Band's Shock and Aftermath
Bootleg Rascal vocalist Carlos Lara exclusively revealed to Daily Mail that the man had contacted the band beforehand to arrange the surprise. They were completely unaware of the outcome. 'I don't think I have ever felt more awkward on stage in my life,' Carlos admitted. 'I almost spat my beer out [upon seeing the rejection].' He strongly denied suggestions the event was a stunt to promote their latest single, affirming it was a genuine, unscripted moment.
The band later reached out to the rejected suitor. 'We spoke to the guy and he was doing all right. He was definitely seeking some beers after the show,' Carlos said. They gave him a free T-shirt as a consolation, adding, 'he at least got something out of it.'
Public Reaction and Future Proposals
After sharing the clip online, fans flooded the comments with sympathy and awkwardness. One person wrote, 'Poor fella – anyone know if he's okay?' while another critiqued the planning of the proposal itself.
Despite the cringe-worthy episode, Carlos stated the band remains open to future romantic gestures at their shows. 'We are all about love. If anyone else wants to do a proposal or anything else at our gigs, just hit us up!' he said. However, the band's social media caption hinted at a brief pause, noting: 'Not sure we'll be helping out with another public proposal for a while.'
