The When We Were Young festival, a prominent emo-punk music event held annually in Las Vegas, has been officially cancelled for the 2026 season. Organisers announced the hiatus via social media on Friday, stating they are taking the year off to give the festival "the care it deserves" and ensure future editions remain special.
Festival Takes Planned Break for Quality Assurance
In a heartfelt statement addressed to fans, organisers explained the decision to postpone the 2026 event. "To our When We Were Young Family, the songs, the memories, the moments, none of it exists without you," the announcement read. "After an unforgettable run in Las Vegas, we've decided to take 2026 off to give this festival the care it deserves and to make sure what comes next feels just as special as what came before."
The festival, which typically takes place every October at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds, will now return in October 2027. Organisers emphasised this is not a permanent cancellation but rather a temporary pause, stating: "This isn't goodbye — it's just a pause. We'll see you in 2027."
No Lineup Announced Before Cancellation
Notably, the cancellation occurred before any artist lineup for the 2026 edition was revealed to the public. This marks a departure from previous years where headliners were announced well in advance of the October event.
The festival has established itself as a major destination for emo-punk enthusiasts since its 2022 debut. Last year's 2025 edition featured prominent acts including Blink-182 and Panic! at the Disco as headliners, with supporting performances from Avril Lavigne, Plain White T's, Weezer, All Time Low, The Offspring, Simple Plan, and Knocked Loose.
Previous Weather-Related Cancellation in 2022
This isn't the first time the festival has faced cancellation challenges. During its inaugural year in 2022, organisers were forced to cancel the first day of the two-day event mere hours before it was scheduled to begin due to dangerous weather conditions.
"The National Weather Service has now upgraded their Saturday forecast to a High Wind Warning, including dangerous 30 to 40 mph sustained winds with potential 60 mph gusts," organisers explained at the time. "We have no other choice than to cancel today's When We Were Young Festival. The safety of our fans, artists and staff will always be our top priority. This was not a decision that came lightly."
Despite the cancellation of the Saturday event, which was set to feature Paramore, Jimmy Eat World, My Chemical Romance, and Avril Lavigne among others, the festival proceeded as planned on Sunday. The last-minute cancellation in 2022 drew criticism from some fans who had traveled internationally to attend, questioning why the decision wasn't made earlier.
The festival has maintained its Las Vegas location at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds for all four years of its existence, and organisers confirm it will return to the same venue in 2027. While no specific reasons were provided for the 2026 cancellation beyond the stated need for careful planning, the decision reflects organisers' commitment to maintaining the event's quality and special atmosphere for future attendees.
