Emmerdale Star Arrested for Assault Day Before Death

Emmerdale and Happy Valley actor Frazer Hammill was arrested in connection with a reported sexual assault merely one day before his tragic death, an inquest has revealed. The 41-year-old star was found deceased at his residence in December 2025, having taken his own life shortly after being questioned by Lancashire Police.

Police Investigation and Arrest Details

Lancashire Police confirmed that they arrested and interviewed Hammill before releasing him on bail. In an official statement, authorities disclosed: "On December 17th last year we received a report of a sexual assault on a woman in her 40s. The assault was reported to have happened on December 14th. Following enquiries a man in his 40s from Doncaster was arrested on our behalf by South Yorkshire Police on December 29th. He was interviewed and bailed later the same day."

The investigation was subsequently closed after police were notified by South Yorkshire Police on December 30th that Hammill had been found dead. The victim was informed of this development.

Inquest Findings and Coroner's Conclusions

During the inquest held in April 2026, area coroner Louise Slater detailed the circumstances surrounding Hammill's passing. She stated that the medical cause of death was "1a hanging" and confirmed that Hammill passed away at his home on December 30th. The coroner emphasized: "He was a single man, an actor, and very close to his family members."

Notably, Hammill left a note for his neighbour instructing them not to enter his home but to contact the police instead. Paramedics and police arrived at his flat just after 2pm, but resuscitation attempts proved unsuccessful, with his time of death recorded at 2.13pm.

Evidence of Deliberate Action

Coroner Slater revealed that Hammill had left additional notes for his family and friends, leading her to conclude: "Therefore, I am satisfied that this was a deliberate act and Frazer had put thought, planning and intention into his actions."

Family Statements and Custody Observations

A statement from Hammill's sister Caroline expressed her "complete shock" at his death, noting that none of the family were aware he was "feeling low enough to end his life" and that he had appeared happy in recent interactions.

Interestingly, custody officers testified at Doncaster Coroner's Court that Hammill was in "good spirits" when he left the station following his arrest. They reported having no concerns regarding his safety or mental well-being at that time.

Career Highlights and Acting Roles

Frazer Hammill enjoyed a notable television career, appearing in Emmerdale as a prison guard and in Happy Valley as a detective constable. His theatrical credits included performances as Kev in Abraham's Point, the titular role in The Heart of Thomas Hardy, Luke in Shed Convention, and Jonathan O'Malley in Last Laugh.
