Michael Carrick has been given a clear target following his appointment as permanent head coach of Manchester United. The 44-year-old signed a two-year contract, which is no coincidence, as the club's executives expect the Premier League title to return to Old Trafford by the time the deal expires in 2028.
Project 150 and League Ambitions
Chief executive Omar Berrada outlined the club's vision during a recent interview, stating that Project 150 aims to win the 21st league title before the club's 150th anniversary in 2028. "Ideally, we do it next season, and if not, then the following season," Berrada said. Carrick is well aware of these expectations, having been informed during contract negotiations.
Challenges Ahead
Carrick's impressive second-half run this season was built on free midweeks, but next season will bring a more demanding schedule with Champions League football. He will need to manage two games per week and strengthen the squad, particularly in midfield, to replace Casemiro. The recent drop in points required to win the title (84 and 85 points in the last two seasons) makes the target more achievable.
While not winning the league within two years may not be seen as failure, Carrick must come close to secure a contract extension. The club's confidence is high, and with proper recruitment this summer, United can build on their progress under Carrick.
