Graham Wood Returns as Gateshead FC Chairman After McWilliams Steps Down
Graham Wood Returns as Gateshead FC Chairman

Graham Wood has returned to Gateshead FC on an interim basis following the departure of chairman Bernard McWilliams, who has stepped down due to ill health. The club confirmed the leadership change in a statement, describing McWilliams's decision as 'difficult' but necessary.

McWilliams's Tenure and Departure

Bernard McWilliams was part of the Gateshead Soul supporters group that helped save the club from going out of business in the summer of 2019. He later became vice-chairman just over a year after that rescue and stepped up as chairman last summer. However, ongoing health issues have forced him to step back from his role.

In a statement on the club's website, McWilliams expressed gratitude for the support he received during his tenure. 'I thank the board for their support and understanding as I take this difficult decision to step back, but the time has come to put my health first,' he said. 'There could be no better person to take over than Graham Wood, whose love for Gateshead Football Club is second to none, and I look forward to his speedy approval from the Independent Football Regulator to allow him to take charge.'

McWilliams also thanked fans, staff, players, and volunteers, adding, 'The club will always hold a special place in my heart, and I look forward to continuing to support Gateshead FC in the future.'

Graham Wood's Return

Wood's return reignites memories of his previous tenure as chairman, during which Gateshead rose up the non-league pyramid. The club came within 90 minutes of a historic promotion to the English Football League before losing in the play-off final to Cambridge United. His interim appointment requires approval from the Independent Football Regulator.

The club paid tribute to McWilliams's dedication, saying in a statement: 'This has not been an easy decision for Bernard. Over recent years, he has dedicated an enormous amount of time, energy and commitment to the club, always putting Gateshead FC and its supporters at the heart of everything he has done. While stepping away is necessary for him to focus on his health and wellbeing, it is a decision taken with a heavy heart.'

Gateshead FC expressed sincere gratitude to McWilliams for his leadership and wished him a full and speedy recovery.
